Deputy is completely deaf so is looking for a home with a fenced in yard. We would prefer a home with older kids since he has a habit of play nibbling on hands and clothes (I cannot for the life of me break him of this). But he is as sweet as they come! Neutered, up to date on shots, and on heartworm prevention...so all you have to worry about is loving him!
I'm a bit late to the game on this post since we've had our current foster for about 6 weeks already. But life, as it usually does, sneaks up on you and before you know it weeks have gone by. So without further ado, meet Deputy! If you can't tell by this photo, Deputy has one blue eye and one brown eye and I think it makes him such a handsome little devil. Deputy is a 3 year old bouncy boy with energy for days. This little spitfire would make a fantastic running buddy. He loves to play tug, ride in the car, and sit as close to you as physically possible :) Deputy is completely deaf so is looking for a home with a fenced in yard. We would prefer a home with older kids since he has a habit of play nibbling on hands and clothes (I cannot for the life of me break him of this). But he is as sweet as they come! I never know how long a foster will stay with us. I've had dogs for as long as 9 months or as short as a week. Our most recent house guest was only with us for 6 days! Her name was Powder and she came from Yorktown, VA. Her elderly owner was moving and could not take sweet Powder with him. She was very timid but super sweet. At 5 years old she was well taken care of and, as far as fosters go, she was easy peasy. Just as I was getting to know her, we received a perfect adoption application for her. And bada-bing-bada-boom, she was off to her new home!
A week after she was adopted I got an update that she was doing well in her new home and was slowly coming out of her shell. Her new mom is smitten with her and she is enjoying being an only dog-child :) Until the next one... I wish you all could see the smile on my face as I type this post. The long search for the perfect family for Jack has come to a wonderful end! We had Jack for over 6 months and I was beginning to wonder when his turn would come. But this past weekend his new parents, Hannah and Carleen, drove all the way from Ohio to meet and adopt Jack. He warmed up to them rather quickly and before I knew it, he was happily loaded in their back seat complete with pillow and rawhide. Check out how happy he looks (Hannah was so sweet to send this to me during their drive home). He will be the center of attention as the only dog in his new home and I am sure he will enjoy the endless belly rubs and tennis balls. My heart is soaring for Jack! He waited so long for his forever home and it was worth the wait. And to Hannah and Carleen, thank you both for loving my sweet boy and giving him the chance he deserves. He is lucky to have you :) Holy smokes it's almost the holidays! Thanksgiving is a mere 3 days away and the Lombardo household has so much to be thankful for this year. I, for one, am so grateful for a life that allows me to live my dream of saving animals, even if it is just one foster at a time. And for a helpful husband who pretends not to notice when a new dog shows up and lives with the endless amount of dog hair. Before I get to blabbering, let me introduce y'all to our newest foster, Jack! Handsome, huh? There are just not enough good things to say about sweet Jack. He is a young boy at only 2 years old and he absolutely loves to play with toys. Jack was an owner surrender but was loved in his previous home. He is potty trained, knows a few tricks, is fully vetted, and seriously sweet. He likes to lay as close to you as possible and would love a home that lets him sleep in the bed (dogs are not allowed on our bed, but every night he gives it a try and I have to tell him to get down). Jack gets along with my dogs splendidly and is rather submissive, so I feel he would get along with most other dogs. My Bella even let him sleep next to her in her dog bed, which NEVER happens, so that's saying something :) He's also really hard to photograph, hence the limited pictures, because every time I pull out the camera he runs away. I caught him almost asleep here... If you're interested in an all around sweet boy, Jack is it! My goal is to give him the gift of a forever home before New Years :)
If you read my last post about Alex, you'll be happy to know that he was adopted earlier this month! And by none other than Gabe's adoptive family (remember Gabe from a few posts back?). They drove all the way from Connecticut, a 10 hour drive, to meet and pick up Alex. Thrilled would be an understatement, I was practically leaping with excitement for him. Ah, that feeling never gets old :) And there is always another waiting, so allow me to introduce...Sparky ( I didn't choose the terribly generic name). Sparky came to the rescue from North Carolina and is estimated to be about 8 years old. He does have a little trouble getting around due to some stiffness in his back, which causes him to walk in a wobbly manner. Sparky is also deaf, but was examined by our vet and given a clean bill of health! Sparky is house and crate trained, is good with kids, and gets along wonderfully with other dogs. He loves to just lay on the couch and have his ears scratched. If you're searching for a mature older fella who is just looking for a place to live out his golden years, let me know!
I can't believe my last post was in February! The Mister and I have had a busy summer with vacations, weddings, and family visits. But now it's back to business as usual as we head into Fall. So with that said, meet our newest couch crasher, Alex! Now when I say perfect, I mean it. He is seriously wonderful. Alex is 6 years old and was turned in to a local shelter here in VA. He was an owner surrender and I have no idea why someone would want to give this sweet baby up. Alex is neutered, fully vetted, housebroken, gets along wonderfully with other dogs, and loves everyone. He is a little too interested in cats so would probably do best in a cat free home. Alex knows how to sit and walks pretty well on a leash. Also, this boy LOVES to play fetch. Check him out... Oh, I just adore him. Even the Mister is rather smitten :) Maybe I can finally convince him that we need a third dog (a girl can dream, right?). If you or anyone you know is interested in adopting sweet Alex, send them my way! We Virginians are bracing for yet another winter storm and, frankly, the Lombardo household is over it! But in the midst of the frigid temperatures, we've taken in another warm bodied house guest. Everyone, meet Buzz! Buzz is our first liver spotted dalmatian, which just means his spots are brown instead of the traditional black. The liver color is caused by a recessive gene in Dalmatians. Buzz is a 6-7 year old boy all the way from Georgia. He was surrendered to a shelter when his owner became very ill and unable to care for him. He was kept as an outside dog in his former home and is not potty trained, so the first step for this boy is house breaking! However, he seems to be picking it up pretty quickly, and has only had one accident since he's been here. Buzz is up to date on his shots, neutered, heartworm negative, and microchipped. He knows how to sit and give paw, does not have any visible signs of neglect, and his coat is extremely soft so I take comfort in the fact that he was probably loved in his previous home. Buzz has been with us almost a week and is quickly learning our routine. He is a rather silly boy and loves nothing more than to curl up with a blanket on the couch. He could use some work on the leash (he's a puller) and needs to learn how to take treats nicely, but other than that he is a sweet, low key kind of guy. Buzz is one of those all around nice dogs who would do well in almost any household (although I have no idea how he would react to cats). He loves people and other dogs and is not too high energy. If you are looking to add a sweet spotted face to your life, let me know or head over to adoptaspotdalrescue.com and fill out an application.
Keep warm, y'all! Holiday Greetings, y'all!! Can you believe it's only a few days before Christmas? This past weekend our new foster was transported to us all the way from Georgia and boy is he a southern gentleman. Meet Gabe!!! The very first thing I noticed about him were those eyes! He has the deepest and kindest gaze I've ever seen. Sweet Gabe was found at a Georgia shelter a few months ago as a stray with a large cancerous tumor on his chest. Adopt A Spot raised the money to have the tumor removed and he spent 4 weeks recovering. All the cancer was removed and the vet said it is not likely that it will return...woo hoo! This was his before picture: He is now completely healed and living the good life. He's got a blocky head like a boxer and a docked tail that never stops wagging. One look at his body and you can tell he was definitely neglected. He has bumps and discolorations, a thick scar around his neck, where a collar was most likely embedded, and his teeth are not in the best shape. But he is such a kind and gentle soul. He is a low key kind of guy, who LOVES to take naps and snuggle as close to you as possible. Gabe is completely housebroken and crate trained and gets along with other dogs (even when Bella growls at him). No food or toy aggression and he knows how to sit! Could he be any more perfect? The Mister may be in trouble with this one, as I absolutely adore him! He will be having his eye checked by the vet soon, as there seems to be a blemish on his eyelid that is causing him to produce excess tears (hence the dark stain below his right eye). Check him out getting a bath at Two Brothers Dog Wash (a self service dog wash. Locals- y'all should seriously check it out!) For perhaps the first time ever, Gabe will experience a holly jolly Christmas surrounded by love and a rawhide or two :) If you or anyone you know is interested in a dog who is definitely on the 'nice list,' let me know!
MERRY CHRISTMAS and A HAPPY NEW YEAR! Holy yikes, its almost October...how did that happen? Funny how each day seems to drag on forever, but then you stop and realize months have flown by. Oh life, how you perplex me :) That being said, we've had Ranger for a month now and I thought I'd give y'all an update on how he's doing. As of yet, no prospective adopters but I'm hopeful that his perfect family is out there somewhere. The biggest news is that Ranger knows how to sit and lie down on hand signal!!! Excuse me while I do a happy dance. I'll be honest, he learned it in ONE afternoon and with a handful of treats. He is such a smart boy and seriously eager to please. I've only had him out on the leash a handful of times and lets just say it's a work in progress. BUT, each time we've been out, he's done well with meeting new people and was such a friendly guy. He has no issues with people or other dogs and he is amazing with kids! We crate him while we're at work and he does fine, although he is very vocal about being in there at first (probably would not be good for apartment dwellers). He sleeps in his bed at night next to ours and wakes us up if he has to go potty in the night. Mr. Ranger still wins the award for best snuggler. He has to be as close as possible and is like my little shadow. He goes wherever I go and likes to be able to see me at all times. We took him to the beach this past weekend and it was no surprise that he loved it! He is a water loving Dal for sure. And super photogenic :) Up next for Ranger will be more leash training for sure. We have a big adoption event at the beginning of October in Chesapeake, VA. called Bark in the Park (check it out it's seriously awesome), where we hope Ranger will get some exposure and maybe meet his new family!
Phew! August was quite a busy month for the Lombardo household. We’ve traveled all over the place: The mister was in Kentucky for a bit, I visited family in Arkansas and we drove all the way up the East coast for a wedding in Vermont. Real road warriors we were. But alas, things are settling down and we are back to our normal routine which means it’s time for a new foster! Allow me to introduce Ranger… This freckle faced boy is just a pup at 10 months old and is our second DEAF foster. Yep, here we go again with trying to use hand signals and figuring out how to communicate. Needless to say, the Mister is thrilled. HA!
But on a serious note, Ranger is as sweet as they come. He loves everyone, including kids (check out the pics below of him playing so gently with my 2 year old niece), and is very playful. He came with his very own baby pool and LOVES splashing around and laying in the water. Neutered, house trained, crate trained and healthy; a total package! Even his high pitched girly bark is adorable. He doesn't know any tricks and needs some work on the leash, but hey nobody's perfect :) Ranger came from a home in Maryland (the product of a backyard breeder), where he had a family. When asked why they were surrendering him, his previous family stated that he played too rough, needed training and was "too stressful" to deal with. So they gave him away. Just another example of our disposable society that throws in the towel when things get a bit rough. Another case of people who think they can just give their problem to someone else to deal with and go on with their lives. I always want to ask people who surrender their pets, 'so if your children grow up and become “too stressful” will you be giving them up as well?' Speaking of children, these parents have just shown their kids that animals are disposable and can be gotten rid of when you don’t feel like being bothered with them anymore. It’s so aggravating. So the next few weeks/months will be spent working with this little guy while we search for his new home. Another lesson in patience wrapped up in a spotted silly package. Know anyone interested in adopting Ranger, send them my way! |
AuthorHey y'all! My name is Abbey and saving animals is what I was born to do. I live in Virginia with my husband and 2 dogs. We almost always have a 3rd dog, as new fosters come and go. My hope is that someone will read this blog and want to make a difference for the millions of shelter dogs in the world. Archives
