-Nearly 70,000 dogs were used in U.S. labs in 2012.
- Beagles are the most popular breed for lab use because of their docile, trusting, forgiving, people-pleasing personalities.
-Research beagles are usually obtained directly from commercial breeders who specifically breed dogs to sell to scientific institutions (that is disturbing!).
The Beagle Freedom Project works with research labs to release the animals in their custody in order to give them a chance at a normal life. Their website is full of success stories of former test animals that have found loving homes (http://www.beaglefreedomproject.org/about).
There are so many companies that employ animal testing it can be overwhelming. Try replacing products one at a time. This month I am searching for a suitable replacement for my laundry soap. Next month I’ll tackle the Clorox wipes. It will be a tough ongoing process but one definitely worth the undertaking.
For all local readers, there is a store in MacArthur mall in Norfolk, VA. called Lush that only sells products (soaps, lotions, etc.) that are NOT tested on animals!
