-I don’t want to take my dog's “manhood” away. This makes me cringe. You sir, are an idiot. Speaking privileges temporarily revoked. Dogs do not have this idea of manhood or masculinity that has been created by human society. They do not attach some sort of value or rank based on their boy parts and they certainly don’t go around comparing their bits with other male dogs. The procedure is extremely common and the dog is put under during the operation, so you can be sure he won't feel a thing.
-It’s too expensive. Wrong again. There are so many programs and options out there for low cost spay and neuter. Most SPCA’s have low income based clinics that will work with you to afford the procedure. There are also mobile clinics that travel around to solely perform affordable spay and neuter surgeries. PETA is another resource to check out when looking for low cost fixing. A simple Google search for your area will result in a ton of options for you.
-We just want to breed him/her once, and we’ll find homes for the puppies. You. Are. Ridiculous. Do you not see the selfishness in your actions? Your dog’s litter will be contributing to the population explosion problem. And guess what? Chances are high that your beloved pups will be given to people who will eventually abandon them at the shelter when they’re no longer cute little puppies. It’s more common than you think. Unless your dog can speak 9 languages or is a borderline genius, it should be fixed. End of story.
If that’s not enough to convince you, neutering your male dogs prevents a lot of unwanted behavior such as “marking” in the house (i.e, peeing on all of your stuff), and dominant behavior toward other animals. And if you think getting your female dog spayed is expensive, wait until you see the vet bills for a mother dog and a litter of pups. Ouch!
Like most issues related to animals, the solution is quite simple. Please do the right thing and get your pets spayed or neutered. It, quite literally, will save lives.
